Subject: [fathers4equality] an idea about educating our youth
Just an idea here for feedback --> I know this may sound a little extreme,
but I am just throwing the idea around for discussion.
My gut feeling is that this idea could possibly be controversial, and could
maybe get some reasonable exposure in the media.
===================
If we were to create a pamphlet called: "Young Men - Know your rights in Family
Law - before its too late!"
These pamphlets would emphasise the lack of rights that a male would have, in
the event that they would get a girlfriend pregnant.
The idea would be to SCARE the hell out of young men who don't realise the
disaster that could befall on them, by being careless.
We would then approach schools and request distribution of the pamphlets to boys
only, and we would offer a speaker to come to school and 'warn' young men of the
dangers of being A FATHER!
*We could highlight the fact that the prospective father would have ZERO say on
whether the child gets aborted or not
*We could highlight the fact that regardless of how good of a father he may be,
that the courts will almost certainly not grant him custody
*We could highlight the fact that regardless what a court order may say, his
girlfriend could refuse any access to his child - for ever!
*We could highlight the fact that even though he may be living at home and not
working, he (or his parents) could be forced to pay up to $360 per week for a
child he isn't allowed to even see
*We could highlight the fact that their chances of suicide grow x-fold just by
becoming a dad
*We could highlight the fact that by becoming a non-custodial dad, that they are
almost guaranteeing themselves a life of poverty and depression
..............and so on and so on.
Currently within schools, there is a huge emphasis on PREVENTION. There is
a lot of emphasis of drug education, there is a lot of emphasis on sex
education, there is a lot of emphasis on educating our kids against domestic
violence, but who is telling our young men that their lives will effectively be
destroyed if they get someone pregnant?
The answer is - NO ONE!
I know this approach is focussed on men, and I know that this does not directly
address the issue of the welfare the child, but surely in a country that tries
to protect our youth from harm's way, we also have a responsibility to protect
our young men from such devastation?
Any comments?
